The technology behind your treatment
Our commitment to innovation means you benefit from treatments that are more precise, less invasive, and more efficient than ever before.
- 3Shape TRIOS 3D scanning: replaces impression trays with a fast digital scan.
- DentalMonitoring: remote check-ins for aligner patients between visits.
- KaVo DIAGNOcam: radiation-free cavity detection using near-infrared light.
- LED diode laser: for gum contouring, implant exposures and soft tissue work.
- Digital X-rays: fully digital since 2014.
See your own scan on screen
The entire TRIOS scan takes less than five minutes, and patients who have previously gagged on impression trays find it a revelation.
For patients considering Invisalign or smile design, the system can generate a digital preview of your proposed treatment outcome while you are still in the chair.
Frequently asked questions
What is the 3Shape TRIOS scanner?
It replaces traditional dental impression trays with a fast, comfortable digital scan that captures the precise contours of your teeth and gums in three dimensions. The entire process takes less than five minutes and produces accurate digital records that can be sent electronically to our dental laboratory for same-day processing.
How does DentalMonitoring work?
Using the DentalMonitoring app and ScanBox Pro device, Invisalign and clear aligner patients can send photos of their teeth directly to Dr Gill from anywhere in the world. Dr Gill reviews the images, monitors progress and communicates guidance through the app, reducing the number of in-person appointments required.
Can you detect cavities without X-rays?
The KaVo DIAGNOcam uses near-infrared light to detect cavities and cracks without X-rays. It is completely radiation-free, making it ideal for children, pregnant patients and anyone who prefers to minimise X-ray exposure, and it detects decay at its earliest stages.
What do you use the dental laser for?
We use an LED diode laser for a range of soft-tissue procedures including gum contouring, implant exposures, and the removal of soft tissue lesions. Laser dentistry is typically faster, more precise, and associated with less post-operative discomfort than conventional surgical techniques.
How much radiation do your X-rays use?
Thorndon Dental has been fully digital since 2014. Digital radiography delivers approximately 90% less radiation than conventional film X-rays, while producing sharper, more detailed images that can be instantly reviewed on-screen with the patient.
