Tooth extractions & wisdom teeth removal Wellington
While preserving natural teeth is always our first priority, there are situations where extraction is the most appropriate course of action.
When an extraction is recommended
Severely decayed teeth, teeth with recurrent abscesses, and teeth that are causing crowding or damaging adjacent teeth may all require removal to protect your overall oral health.
- Severe decay that cannot be restored
- Teeth with recurrent abscesses
- Teeth causing crowding
- Teeth damaging their neighbours
- Impacted wisdom teeth
We preserve bone for future implants
Our dentists take great care to preserve as much of the surrounding bone as possible during extractions, which is particularly important if you are considering a dental implant in the future.
Frequently asked questions
Why do wisdom teeth so often need removing?
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to emerge, typically in the late teens or early twenties. Because most modern jaws do not have sufficient space to accommodate them, they frequently become impacted, trapped beneath the gum or against neighbouring teeth, which can cause significant pain, infection and damage to adjacent teeth.
Will the extraction hurt?
All tooth extractions at Thorndon Dental are performed under local anaesthetic, ensuring you are comfortable throughout the procedure.
I get anxious at the dentist. What are my options?
Tell us when you book. Nervous and lapsed patients are a large part of our practice, so we will talk you through what is about to happen, work at your pace, and stop whenever you need a break.
What happens after the extraction?
We provide clear aftercare instructions, and discuss your options for replacing the tooth if appropriate.
