Dental implants

Dental implants are the closest thing modern dentistry has to growing a new tooth. A small titanium post takes the place of the missing root, and a custom-made crown, bridge or denture is fitted on top. At our Wellington practice on Tinakori Road, Dr Parm Gill has been placing implants for more than 12 years.

Why choose dental implants over other options?

Implants are the only tooth replacement that preserves your jawbone as well as your smile. Dentures and conventional bridges sit on top of the gum, but an implant works like a natural tooth root, keeping the bone active and your bite stable.

  • Adjacent teeth stay untouched. No need to grind down healthy teeth to anchor a bridge.
  • They look lifelike. Only you and your dentist will know the difference.
  • They preserve bone. Implants protect the jaw from the bone loss that follows tooth loss.
  • Your bite stays natural. Neighbouring teeth cannot drift into the gap.
  • Maintenance is simple. Brush and floss exactly as you do with natural teeth.

Which type is right for you?

The right solution depends on how many teeth are missing and the condition of your jaw. Your dentist will recommend the best fit at your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

How much do dental implants cost in Wellington?

Costs vary with the number of implants and the type of restoration, so we provide a written quote after your consultation and before any treatment starts. Accident-related tooth loss may qualify for ACC funding, and we offer several payment options.

How long do dental implants last?

With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, the implant itself can last for decades and often for life. The crown on top typically lasts 10 to 15 years before it may need replacing.

Are dental implants painful?

The procedure is done under local anaesthetic, so you should feel no pain during placement. Most patients describe the recovery as milder than a tooth extraction, with any discomfort managed by over-the-counter pain relief for a few days.

Am I a candidate for dental implants?

Most healthy adults with adequate jawbone are candidates. Gum disease, smoking and some medical conditions can affect suitability, which is why we assess your dental, bone and overall health before recommending treatment.

Can ACC pay for my dental implant?

If your tooth was lost or damaged in an accident, ACC may contribute to the cost of implant treatment. Thorndon Dental is an ACC registered provider and we will help you lodge the claim.

What happens at my implant consultation?

Your first visit is an assessment, not a commitment. Your dentist will examine your teeth, gums and jawbone, take digital scans, talk through your medical history, and listen to what you want to achieve. You will leave with a clear recommendation, a written treatment plan and the full cost.

Who will place my implant?

Dr Parm Gill has placed dental implants using modern digital technology for over 12 years. He completed his accreditation with the Australian Society of Implant Dentistry through the Level I to III accreditation courses and the Level IV Advanced Surgical Skills course, which included a Diploma in Head and Neck Anatomy at the University of Sydney Medical Faculty. He is joined by Dr Raquel Kirwin, who brings advanced training in surgical techniques and implant placement.
